Equine Obstacle Challenge Competition
Obstacle Challenge competitions are Horse Obstacle contests, focusing on negotiating a designed course of man-made and simulated obstacles. Events are held in an arena, enclosed field, or compact outdoor area rather than a long trail ride. These events emphasize precise horsemanship, training, responsiveness, and athletic ability in handling “trail-like” scenarios with a little twist to them. These obstacles aren’t necessarily “natural” in design, you will find all kinds of balloons, streamers, loud noises and manmade spooky types of simulations.

Typical obstacles include:
-
Tarps or plastic sheets to walk over
-
Stepping through small logs or tires
-
Side passing over poles or around objects
-
Dragging items (like a log or slicker)
-
Mail retrieval from a box
-
Water crossings (artificial tubs)
-
Car washes (hanging strips or noodles)
-
Mounting/dismounting
-
Tight mazes or ground tying
Competitions are judged on a point scale per obstacle, judging on correctness, efficiency, attitude, and minimal hesitation or disobedience. These events are not timed but continuous movement is the goal. The program is open to all breeds of equine and all riding disciplines, serving as great training for trail riding or other events. Our program includes beginner-friendly divisions as well as Advanced levels. The focus is on building a versatile, confident horse that handles unusual situations smoothly and willingly.
Both formats promote safe, capable trail horses but differ in setting: Trail Challenge prioritize natural trail endurance and realism over longer distances, while Obstacle Challenge highlight precision and variety in a more controlled, “unnatural” and concentrated course.
